The crew of the Nebuchadnezzar lived a lifestyle that is similar to the Middle Way advocated by Buddha. He teaches a monk should not be guided his desire. A passage from the Sabbasava-sutta states that a monk should wear robes only to keep off cold or heat, and eat sufficient food, not for pleasure, but only for the nourishment of his body (Rahula 103). The crew embodies this example. They eat bowls of unfavourable snot, which is protein “combined with synthetic aminos, vitamins, and minerals”, which is “everything the body needs” according to Dozer, and sleep in bare quarters. Unlike the fashionable and stylish clothes they wear in the Matrix, they are dressed in threadbare clothes. By following the Middle Way taught by Buddha, they can carry out their duties without distraction.
