The Matrix Trilogy also make references to Mahayana Buddhists’ ideas. The Mahayana branch of Buddhism believes in the idea of bodhisattvas, people who are spiritually awakened by the truth, help others to achieve their enlightenments (Alldritt 49). The crew of the Nebuchadnezzar embodies these characteristics. Rather than remain outside of the Matrix where they are safer, they choose to go back repeatedly to the Matrix with the goal of freeing more minds and bodies of people who are trapped within the Matrix (Flannery-Dailey and Wagner 29). They show concern for those who are still trapped in the Matrix, just like the bodhisattvas who demonstrated compassion for those who are still struck in samara, cycle of births and rebirths.
